This Holiday, Save the Stories

The upcoming holiday season, when the relatives get together, is an ideal time for sharing family stories. Many of us have extended families that are scattered across the country and beyond, so opportunities for sharing stories are few and far between.

Yet, the enthusiasm for hearing those stories and preserving them for future generations, is growing.

If you want to get your relatives to share stories this holiday, pick a time when people are relaxed. For some, an activity like baking provides a relaxed setting and the trigger for stories. Children learn to make “Grandma’s Christmas Cookies” and at the same time, learn what life was like for Grandma when she was young. They are quick to understand that these stories are part of who they are.
Just be sure to turn on a tape recorder or video camera when Grandma starts talking.

Some people turn to professionals to help them share their personal history, while others prefer the do-it-yourself approach.

Most families include one or two history buffs who know stories going back generations. But unless those memories have been recorded, preserved, and archived, those stories may be lost forever. To begin collecting your family’s history, here are some tips:

  • Prepare a list of open-ended questions, including some about experiences and some about values and beliefs;
  • Use photo albums and other treasured collections to trigger memories;
  • Practice being a good listener;
  • Purchase high-quality media for your recordings, and make a back-up copy as soon as possible;
  • Talk with siblings and extended family members about the value of preserving and sharing memories. Plan now for how you’ll share the work, the fun, and the expenses of a family history project.
